They signed Jacoby Brissett for one year and $8 million (plus incentives), the largest deal for any QB from the spot starter/high-end backup category. That said, the Commanders were rather up-front about their plan, including adding a veteran for competition. It’s understandable why outsiders would be confused. No matter how many times anyone says they really, really liked Howell coming out of college, the Commanders waited until pick 144 to select him, even trading down 24 slots before snagging the North Carolina alum. Howell has one career start, and that happened only when Taylor Heinicke told Ron Rivera to start the kid in last season’s finale. Was this choice odd, seeing as the coaching staff and front office might need a winning season to avoid becoming the former coaching staff and front office? Of course!
